Swedish Couple Turns Birthday Party Into Surprise Wedding

When guests arrived at what they thought was a milestone birthday party in Gothenburg, Sweden, they had no idea they were about to witness a wedding instead.

University sweethearts Johanna and Oskar Karlqvist pulled off the ultimate surprise by transforming their joint 30th birthday celebration into their wedding day. The couple chose Götaplatsen, the city square where they first crossed paths in 2015, as the location for their secret ceremony.

Both students at Chalmers University of Technology, Johanna and Oskar met during a student gathering on August 18, 2015. Their initial hello didn't spark instant romance, but joining the same student association brought them closer together, and by summer 2016, friendship had blossomed into love.

When it came time to propose, Oskar didn't disappoint. He got down on one knee on a cliff in the Gothenburg archipelago, presenting Johanna with her grandmother's ring, a family heirloom carrying generations of history.

The couple designed their entire celebration as a tribute to the city that brought them together. After exchanging vows at Götaplatsen, they hosted a reception in Trädgårdsföreningen, one of Gothenburg's historic garden parks.
