Swedish Man Rescues Orphaned Otter, She Returns for Cuddles

When Mats Janzon heard soft peeping sounds during a walk near his Swedish home, he discovered a starving baby otter curled up alone in the grass. After waiting hours for her mother to return, he found that she'd been killed on a nearby road.

Janzon, who had recently left his job as a pilot to focus on helping wildlife, brought the tiny otter home. He named her Leya after the name popped into his mind during a quiet moment by the lake. When he said it aloud, she instantly looked up at him.

Caring for Leya meant round-the-clock feedings and constant worry. She cried when Janzon left the room and curled up in his lap to feel safe. "The first time she let me pet her, I remember thinking this can't be real," he told an animal stories account on social media.

Janzon started teaching Leya to swim in a plastic kiddie pool in his backyard. She was clumsy at first, but day by day she grew more confident until she was ready for the lake.
