
Swedish Engineers Build Fridge-Sized Machine Making Fuel from Air

The husband-and-wife team founded Aircela in New York back in 2019 with a bold vision. They wanted to create fuel without drilling, refining, or polluting.
Their breakthrough device unveiled in May 2025 pulls CO₂ directly from the atmosphere and combines it with hydrogen from water to create genuine gasoline. The machine produces 3.6 liters of fuel every 24 hours while absorbing 10 kilograms of carbon dioxide from the air.
The fuel works in any modern car without modifications. It has the same octane rating as premium 95-octane gasoline but contains zero sulfur, ethanol, or heavy metals.
Here's how the magic happens. The machine first draws in surrounding air and passes it through a potassium hydroxide solution that captures atmospheric CO₂. Renewable electricity then splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis, releasing the oxygen back into the air.

The captured carbon dioxide and hydrogen combine to produce methanol. A catalytic process called methanol-to-gasoline converts that methanol into usable fuel.
The result is completely carbon neutral. When an engine burns this fuel, it only releases the same CO₂ the machine originally pulled from the atmosphere.
The Bright Side
The Dahlgrens designed their invention for places where traditional fuel access is difficult but clean energy is plentiful. Remote communities, farms, military bases, and industrial sites with excess solar or wind power can now produce their own gasoline on demand.
The machine holds up to 64 liters internally and costs between $14,000 and $18,500 per unit. Aircela plans to begin U.S. sales before 2027 arrives.
The technology does require about 20 kilowatt-hours of electricity per liter of fuel produced, which is twice the energy the fuel releases when burned. But in areas where renewable energy would otherwise go to waste, that inefficiency becomes irrelevant.
This invention won't replace gas stations in cities, but it could transform energy independence for isolated areas. The future of fuel might just fit in your garage.
