Solar panels installed between active railway tracks with train passing overhead in Switzerland

Swiss Train Tracks Now Generate Solar Power for Households

🤯 Mind Blown

Switzerland just proved that the empty space between train tracks can power homes. After a year of testing, solar panels on active railways are surviving 55 mph trains and producing enough electricity for families.

The space between railroad tracks has always seemed useless, but a Swiss startup just turned it into a clean energy goldmine. After one year of testing, solar panels installed on active train tracks are not only surviving the daily pounding of locomotives but actually powering homes.

In April 2024, Sun-Ways installed 48 removable solar panels along a 330-foot stretch of working railway in Buttes, Switzerland. It became the first removable solar power plant on an active rail line anywhere in the world.

The results speak for themselves. More than 11,000 trains have rolled directly over the panels at speeds up to 55 mph, and every panel remains stable and productive.

Since May 2024, this single 330-foot installation has generated over 16,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity. That's enough to power three to four Swiss households for an entire year, even after accounting for a month-long pause due to snow and maintenance work.

The patented panels sit snugly between the rails and can be quickly removed whenever maintenance crews need access to the tracks. This means no interference with rail operations and no delays for workers.

"We have achieved our objectives, both in terms of railway safety and electricity production," Sun-Ways founder Joseph Scuderi told Swissinfo. The pilot program officially runs through 2028, but the strong early success has everyone hoping for faster approval.

The Ripple Effect

The potential goes far beyond one Swiss village. Switzerland's 3,300-mile rail network could generate up to 2% of the country's electricity if these panels were installed nationwide. That's enough power for 300,000 households without purchasing a single acre of new land or cutting down a single tree.

Railways exist everywhere, and the world is taking notice. An Indonesian railway company recently visited the pilot site after assuming the technology was fake. France's national railway company SNCF signed a partnership deal in February, and Japan and South Korea have expressed interest despite their trains reaching speeds over 186 mph.

Italy could see its own pilot project by the end of this year. Each successful installation proves that unused spaces, even unconventional ones, can help solve our energy challenges.

Hundreds of thousands of miles of train tracks crisscross the globe, all with that same empty space between the rails. Soon, they could all be quietly generating clean energy while trains thunder overhead.
