Sophie Poisel, head of the Lang Walker Family Academy at the museum, designed the program for year 7 to 10 students. "There are two dormitories where the students will stay close by their teachers' quarters," she explained. The top floor houses residencies where students interact face-to-face with astronomers, astronauts, and researchers.

For Salama, the observatory represents something deeper than science. "I think it allows you to put things into perspective, how insignificant we are compared to literally everything else," she said. That access to perspective matters especially for Western Sydney communities who've historically had fewer opportunities to engage with advanced research facilities.

The building itself makes a statement with its distinctive steel exoskeleton design by French Japanese architect Moreau Kusunoki, wrapping 18,000 tonnes of steel around the structure. Five exhibitions will launch with the November opening, but the rooftop observatory promises to be the crown jewel.

The new observatory carries forward Parramatta's astronomical heritage, honoring the site where Governor Thomas Brisbane built his famous observatory that catalogued southern hemisphere stars for the first time.
