Tampa Bay Lightning Gives $300K to Community Champions

🦸 Hero Alert

Five everyday heroes just received $300,000 in grants to support causes transforming Tampa Bay. The Lightning Foundation honored them in February, bringing its 15-year giving total to $35.57 million.

The Tampa Bay Lightning just handed out $300,000 to five people who make their community better every single day.

Each February honoree received a $50,000 grant through the Lightning Community Hero Program to give to charities they care about. Rob Higgins, who helped bring the NHL Stadium Series game to Tampa Bay, got an extra $50,000 on top of his original grant for his exceptional work.

The money will flow to organizations tackling everything from cancer research to early childhood education. Higgins split his donation between USF Health, youth cancer programs, and cancer centers. Lacey Boldman chose the Tampa YMCA, while Savanna Thompson supported ECHO, an organization serving the homeless.

Ashley Lee directed her grant to the ALS Association, and Dr. Daphne Fudge supported early childhood education through two groups helping young children succeed.

Since 2011, the Lightning Foundation has now given $35.57 million to 721 different nonprofits across the Greater Tampa Bay area. That's more than 700 organizations getting real resources to do real work in their neighborhoods.

The program started when the Vinik Family committed $10 million over five seasons back in 2011. In 2021, they added another $10 million to keep it going through the 2025-26 season.

When Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz joined the Lightning ownership group in October 2024, they immediately partnered with the Vinik Family to keep the program strong. Their combined commitment ensures the foundation can keep recognizing people who quietly change lives.

The Ripple Effect

What makes this program special is how it multiplies impact. The Lightning doesn't just write checks to big charities. They find individuals already doing the hard work and give them resources to do more.

Those 721 nonprofits touch nearly every corner of Tampa Bay life. They feed families, cure diseases, teach children, and lift up neighbors who need help. Every $50,000 grant creates waves that reach hundreds or thousands of people.

The program proves what's possible when sports teams invest deeply in their communities for the long haul.
