Tanzanian community members accessing clean water from newly completed infrastructure project

Tanzania Completes 3,700 Water Projects for Millions

Tanzania has finished 3,714 water projects serving communities nationwide, with 778 more underway to bring clean water to hundreds of thousands more residents. The massive infrastructure push is transforming access to safe drinking water across the East African nation.

Nearly four thousand new water projects are bringing clean, reliable water to millions of Tanzanians who desperately needed it.

The Tanzanian government has completed 3,714 water projects worth $720 million, Deputy Minister for Water Kundo Mathew announced to the National Assembly. Another 778 projects valued at $520 million are currently in progress across the country.

One of the most ambitious efforts is happening in Mbeya Region, where a major project drawing from the Kiwira River is nearly halfway complete. When finished this December, it will serve 890,000 residents with clean water every single day.

The project includes a massive treatment plant capable of processing 117 million liters daily, two huge reservoirs holding 10 million liters each, and 37 kilometers of new pipelines. Water projects worth $51 million are simultaneously underway elsewhere in Mbeya Region.

The minister assured concerned lawmakers that contractors are being closely monitored to prevent delays. "The government will release the necessary funds so that the project does not stall," Mathew promised when asked about progress in Kyela District.

The Ripple Effect

The impact goes far beyond turning on taps. Access to clean water near homes means children spend less time hauling water and more time in school. It means women can pursue education and work instead of walking miles each day. It means communities stop losing loved ones to waterborne diseases.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan's investment in modern drilling equipment three years ago is paying off across rural areas. Water basin experts are now being dispatched to villages in Tarime and other areas facing persistent shortages, with drilling rigs ready to follow.

The transformation happening across Tanzania shows what's possible when governments prioritize this fundamental human need. Every completed project represents thousands of families drinking safe water for the first time, healthier children, and communities with the foundation they need to thrive.
