The Tanzanian government has completed 3,714 water projects worth $720 million, Deputy Minister for Water Kundo Mathew announced to the National Assembly. Another 778 projects valued at $520 million are currently in progress across the country.
One of the most ambitious efforts is happening in Mbeya Region, where a major project drawing from the Kiwira River is nearly halfway complete. When finished this December, it will serve 890,000 residents with clean water every single day.
The project includes a massive treatment plant capable of processing 117 million liters daily, two huge reservoirs holding 10 million liters each, and 37 kilometers of new pipelines. Water projects worth $51 million are simultaneously underway elsewhere in Mbeya Region.
The minister assured concerned lawmakers that contractors are being closely monitored to prevent delays. "The government will release the necessary funds so that the project does not stall," Mathew promised when asked about progress in Kyela District.
