Tanzania to Lead Africa's Climate Migration Solutions

Tanzania just stepped up to lead one of Africa's biggest climate challenges, coordinating the continent's efforts to help people displaced by environmental changes.

The country was selected to guide Africa's Climate Mobility Agenda at the Global Climate Mobility Forum in Berlin, where 51 nations gathered to tackle climate-driven migration. This framework helps countries respond when people must move due to droughts, floods, or other climate impacts, protecting their rights and livelihoods along the way.

For Tanzania, this leadership role hits close to home. Between 65 and 70 percent of Tanzanians depend on climate-sensitive work, especially rain-fed farming. Rising sea levels, recurring droughts, and floods are already changing where and how people live, particularly affecting farmers, herders, women, and young people.

Dr. Richard Muyungi, Permanent Secretary in Tanzania's Vice President's Office for Environment, told the forum that his country is ready to make climate mobility "a pathway to resilience, dignity, opportunity and sustainable development." Tanzania isn't just talking about solutions. The government is already restoring degraded forests and water sources, promoting climate-smart farming for better food security, and expanding water access and livestock services to help pastoral communities survive droughts.

These efforts connect to Tanzania's Vision 2050, a national plan to build an inclusive, resilient nation. The vision puts climate resilience at the center of development, recognizing that climate change threatens progress across every sector.

Tanzania's leadership could strengthen how the entire continent addresses climate migration in global discussions. When countries coordinate their response instead of working alone, they can better protect vulnerable communities and turn potential crises into opportunities for sustainable development.
