Team USA Reaches Hockey Championship With 5-2 Win

Young American hockey players are one win away from international glory after punching their ticket to the Hlinka Gretzky Cup championship game in Edmonton.

The U.S. Under-18 Men's Select Team defeated Slovakia 5-2 in Thursday's semifinal at Rogers Place, setting up a title game showdown on Friday night. The championship match will air live on NHL Network at 7 p.m. Eastern time.

Nash Roed from White Bear Lake, Minnesota, stole the show with a hat trick, scoring three goals including an empty-netter in the final seconds. Gavin Burcar from California added a goal and two assists, showcasing the depth of talent on this young American squad.

The game didn't start smoothly for Team USA. Slovakia struck first just under four minutes into the opening period, and the Americans had a goal called back for goaltender interference shortly after.

But Gavin Burcar tied things up on a power play late in the first period, finding the net through traffic from the left circle. From there, the momentum shifted entirely in America's favor.

Roed gave the U.S. the lead early in the second period by burying a rebound. Less than four minutes later, he intercepted a faceoff and lifted the puck past Slovakia's goalie to make it 3-1.

This tournament represents more than just wins and losses for these teenage athletes. The Hlinka Gretzky Cup brings together the best under-18 players from around the world, giving young Americans a chance to compete on an international stage and develop skills they'll carry throughout their careers.

Head coach Reid Cashman praised his team's effort, particularly highlighting how both the power play and penalty kill units came through when needed. Goaltender Mason Courville from Pennsylvania stopped 21 shots to secure the victory.

The U.S. outshot Slovakia 44-23, demonstrating control throughout the game. Ethan Sung added an insurance goal in the third period with a beautiful back-door finish, giving the Americans breathing room before Roed's empty-net hat trick completion.

Now these young players get to compete for a championship representing their country. Whether they face host Canada or Finland in the final, they've already proven they belong among the world's best.
