Team Vigilant Wins First Women's Sailing Championship

After two years of training and four days of nearly perfect sailing, Team Vigilant and skipper Megan Grapengeter-Rudnick just made history on the water.

The team won the inaugural Women's International Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, competing against 20 teams from around the world. Over five days in September, they sailed IC37 keelboats in a regatta designed specifically to showcase elite women sailors.

Team Vigilant dominated the competition with exceptional performances in seven of the ten races. Even on their toughest day, when they finished sixth, seventh, and tenth in the final three races, their earlier excellence secured the win.

"When we started the project, the goal was to win this event," said tactician Stephanie Roble. "Over the last few years, we really focused on becoming the best version of ourselves. It's been a rewarding process as a team, and there have been a lot of highs and lows throughout two years of training."

The final day brought challenging conditions with shifting winds that tested every team. Four different teams remained mathematically capable of winning going into the last races, making the competition fierce until the end.

Team Fair American from American Yacht Club secured second place with consistently strong finishes throughout the week. Their secret was teamwork and steady improvement each day, with skipper Michelle Lahrkamp crediting their success to excellent communication and daily adjustments.

Team MO-Amundsen, led by Hannah Swett, claimed third place after a dramatic final day. They won the first race of the day, struggled in the second, then fought back through the fleet in the final race to secure their podium spot by just one point.
