Teen Battles Cancer While Playing Soccer and Winning Hearts

Luis Maldonado is back doing what he loves most: playing soccer for his high school team while fighting stomach cancer.

The Grant Park High School student missed the entire 2025 soccer season battling the disease. While his teammates played without him, he could only watch from the sidelines, wishing he could help.

But Maldonado refused to let cancer keep him down. He made it back to compete in basketball and spent his summer riding in rodeo competitions. Now he's returned to his first love: soccer.

"It was tough watching the guys and not being able to help," Maldonado said. "It's amazing to be back."

The cancer hasn't completely disappeared yet, and he's still going through chemotherapy treatments. But his doctors found a treatment plan strong enough to keep the disease at bay while letting him attend school and play sports.

Getting back into game shape wasn't easy. "At first I felt like I couldn't keep up with them," he said about early practices. "But I just had to keep running and running."

His persistence paid off. Standing 5 feet 10 inches and weighing just 120 pounds, he's already scored two goals and notched two assists this season. When opponents try to use their size advantage, he has a simple response: "They have a weight advantage on me, but I've got heart."

Coach Mark Boccia wasn't sure what to expect when the season started. "I wasn't sure going into the season what his stamina level was going to be," he admitted. "To his credit, he would play every single minute of every single game if I wanted him to."

Why This Inspires

Maldonado's teammates and coaches aren't the only ones who recognize his incredible determination. His school named him homecoming king, celebrating not just his athletic return but the inspiration he brings to everyone around him.

"We missed him a ton and the kids are happy to have him back," Boccia said. The Dragons even shifted their homecoming celebration from winter to fall this year, adding portable lights for a special soccer game on September 18.

The team gave Maldonado and their community a perfect homecoming gift: a 7 to 1 victory over Clifton Central. Maldonado scored one of the goals in the win.

His story proves that the biggest battles aren't always won by the biggest players.
