Teen Builds Orphanage in Nigeria, Inspires Youth Action

When Nadia Zakaria saw children sleeping on the ground at a local orphanage, she decided to do something about it at just 15 years old.

The teenager from Kogi State, Nigeria, spent a year fundraising from family, friends, and strangers to build a fully equipped orphanage home. On Sunday, she handed over the keys to Oyiza-Salem Divine Orphanage Home in Etahi Community, giving vulnerable children a safe place to call home.

"I have been blessed to grow up in a loving and supportive home," Nadia said at the commissioning ceremony. "I found myself asking: What about the children who didn't get that same chance?"

At first, the goal seemed impossible. Nadia had no experience with construction projects and wasn't sure people would take a 15-year-old seriously. But she started sharing her vision anyway, asking for support one conversation at a time.

The donations started flowing in. Small contributions from friends combined with larger gifts from community members until Nadia had raised enough not just to build the structure, but to furnish every room with beds, furniture, and supplies.

Pastor Kisito Zuberu, founder of the orphanage, couldn't hold back tears at the opening. "When they came last year, the children were sleeping on the ground," he said. "Today Miss Nadia Zakari has given us a fully equipped mansion."

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Nadia's mother, proudly clarified that her daughter mobilized all the resources independently. "My daughter sourced the money spent on the building by herself without me contributing one kobo to the project," the senator said.
