Teen Cancer Survivor Bikes 31 Miles to Help Other Kids

Carter Boyle tackled something most adults wouldn't attempt: a 31-mile bike ride through Pennsylvania's hilly terrain. But for this 13-year-old liver cancer survivor, every mile was a gift back to the kids still fighting.

The teen rode alongside his grandfather Paul during the ninth annual Great Big Group Ride in North Whitehall Township on Sunday. Nearly 150 cyclists joined them to raise money for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley.

Carter was diagnosed with liver cancer at age 2. The foundation provided his family with financial, social, and emotional support during treatment, something he hasn't forgotten.

"It was tough with the hills for sure," Carter said after crossing the finish line. "But I'm glad I was able to do it."

His mother Casey watched as her son became the youngest participant to complete the full 31-mile course. She said Carter has always loved biking with his dad and grandpa, and the whole family showed up to cheer him on.

"All the grandmas, grandpas, brothers. Everybody's here," Casey said. "They were here for his surgery and his cancer battle and they're here now."

Why This Inspires

Carter's ride shows how kids who've faced the hardest battles often become the biggest champions for others. His grandfather Paul said the foundation's work makes a real difference for families navigating childhood cancer, and now Carter is helping expand that impact with every pedal stroke.

The teen has a message for other children facing similar challenges. "I would say just keep going. It's going to get better," he said. "Maybe come try something like this. Do something to make yourself happy during the times."

Every cyclist who showed up Sunday helped raise funds for local children battling cancer and their families, proving that communities show up when kids need them most.
