Teen Cashier Pays $80 Bill, Strangers Give Back $15K

When an elderly woman's card kept declining at a Minnesota Walmart, the checkout line grew tense and impatient. Brent Cabahug, a high school senior working his first job, simply walked around the register and paid her $80 grocery bill himself.

The 18-year-old didn't know the woman. He didn't ask questions or make a scene. He just swiped his card, helped her out, and went back to scanning groceries like nothing had happened.

But someone was watching. Dani Dircks, a mom of four waiting in line, saw the whole thing unfold. "He didn't care in that moment who she was, who she loved, who she voted for," she told WCCO. She decided right then that this kid deserved something in return.

Cabahug had moved to Minnesota from the Philippines with his mom and sister. He's a senior at Stillwater Area High School, saving every paycheck to buy a car. After graduation, he plans to help his family buy their first house and eventually become a nurse after a leg injury ended his volleyball dreams.

Dircks started a GoFundMe to help with his car fund. Within weeks, hundreds of strangers pitched in. The campaign has since raised over $15,000 of its $16,000 goal.

Cabahug never expected anything back. That $80 came straight from money he'd been carefully setting aside for months. He paid it because helping felt like the obvious thing to do.
