Teen Chase Utley Mirrors Phillies Legend Who Shares His Name

When Brian and Amanda Utley's son was born in August 2009, they had no idea their name choice would shape his entire baseball journey.

Their son Chase shares more than just a name with Philadelphia Phillies legend Chase Utley. The Alabama teenager plays second base, bats left-handed, and throws right-handed—exactly like the six-time All-Star who helped the Phillies win the 2008 World Series.

Brian Utley knew exactly who he was naming his son after. As a devoted baseball fan, he watched Chase Utley's career closely and thought the name "just kind of rolls off the tongue" with their last name. Amanda discovered the name independently, loving how it sounded, but initially backed away when Brian revealed the coincidence.

Throughout her pregnancy, she vetted her husband about the ballplayer's character. "Is Chase Utley a good guy? Is he a good leader? Is he a jerk in the locker room?" she asked. When Brian assured her the elder Utley was "an awesome guy" and "a great role model," she felt comfortable with the choice.

The Phillies legend, recently inducted into the team's Wall of Fame after 16 seasons, has met kids named after him before. He's even heard about pets bearing his name—dogs, cats, birds, and at least one fish. But he's never encountered someone with his exact first and last name who also plays his position.

"The last name, I've never met another person named Utley other than my family members," the elder Chase told Fox News Digital. "So to put them both together is extremely unique."

The younger Chase didn't deliberately choose his playing style to match his namesake. His dad coached him from a young age, placing him on the left side of the tee when he first started hitting. The similarities developed naturally through training and athletic development.

Now 16, the Alabama teenager thinks it's "super cool" to share a name with a World Series champion. "When I got to really know and learn about the player that he is and the great leader and great competitor that he was, it's awesome to be named after him," he said.

The younger Chase also plays shortstop and pitches right-handed, carving out his own identity while honoring the legacy attached to his name. His parents' careful consideration about character and leadership when choosing his name has given him a built-in role model.
