Teen Cowboy Lassos Drowning Man From Montana River

When most teens pack for a family camping trip, they bring snacks and a phone charger. Jory Thomas brought his rodeo lasso, and that choice saved a man's life.

The 14-year-old was camping near Greycliff, Montana, on Fourth of July weekend when he heard screams coming from the Yellowstone River. A raft and paddleboard had smashed into a bridge pillar, throwing four people into the fast-moving water.

Three people scrambled to shore, but one man kept drifting downstream, clinging desperately to a cooler. The current was pulling him farther away every second.

Jory emptied his pockets and grabbed his lariat, the thick rope he uses for rodeo competitions. He sprinted along the riverbank, racing to catch up with the struggling man in the chest-deep water.

"The only thing I could focus on was helping him get out of the water," Jory told local news. "I didn't want to see anyone go in front of me."

When he got alongside the man, Jory threw his lasso. The rope sailed through the air and landed perfectly on the first try.

He slowly pulled the exhausted man through the water to safety, holding steady until first responders arrived and took over. The whole rescue happened in minutes, but those minutes meant everything.

Why This Inspires

Jory's grandmother says his first reaction was simple: "I think I just saved a life." She wasn't surprised by his actions, though. "His first instinct always is to help other people. He's always been that way."

The whole community rallied around their young hero. Sweet Grass County Sheriff Alan Ronneberg presented Jory with a Certificate of Achievement for his quick thinking and bravery.

Montana Senator Steve Daines went even further, naming Jory the Montanan of the Month and entering a statement in his honor into the Congressional Record. "Jory demonstrated quick thinking and coolness under pressure, with bravery far beyond his years," Daines wrote.

The senator called Jory "a true example of the Montana spirit," and it's hard to argue. This kid brought a rodeo rope to a camping trip and ended up being exactly where someone needed him to be.

Sometimes the skills we practice for fun turn out to have a bigger purpose than we ever imagined.
