Teen Gets $25K Chick-fil-A Scholarship From CEO Himself
Gustavo Almeida was working his shift at Chick-fil-A when the CEO walked in to hand him a $25,000 scholarship check. He's one of just 13 employees nationwide to win the top prize.
Imagine clocking in for your regular shift at work and leaving with a $25,000 scholarship handed to you by the company's CEO.
That's exactly what happened to Gustavo Almeida, a Brookfield High School senior working at his local Connecticut Chick-fil-A. CEO Andrew Cathy surprised him Tuesday with the check, a laptop, and a spot in a yearlong leadership program.
Almeida earned one of just 13 top scholarships awarded through Chick-fil-A's Remarkable Futures program this year. More than 16,000 employees across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico received scholarship support totaling $29 million, but Almeida's award represents the program's highest honor.
His coworkers weren't shocked. Almeida balances his restaurant job with captaining the basketball team, mentoring through Unified Sports, volunteering at church, and helping care for his younger brothers. Chick-fil-A recognized him as "a true servant leader whose compassion and selflessness positively impact both guests and team members."

The scholarship will fund Almeida's mechanical engineering degree, a passion sparked by working on cars with his uncle. He'll also get mentorship through the leadership development program to help him succeed in college and beyond.
The Ripple Effect
Chick-fil-A has now awarded $244 million in scholarships since starting the program in 1973. That's thousands of young people who got a shot at college they might not have had otherwise.
The company designs these scholarships specifically for hourly team members, many working their first jobs. While other students stress about financial aid applications, winners like Almeida can focus on their studies and dreams.
The Brookfield restaurant shared celebration photos on Facebook with a message that captures what matters most: "This is a life-changing moment, and it couldn't have happened to someone more deserving."
For one hardworking teen who shows up for others every day, someone finally showed up for him in the biggest way.
