Teen Saves 2 Girls From Trafficking Ring in Lagos

When one 18-year-old woman discovered she was being lured into prostitution instead of the restaurant job she'd been promised, she made a choice that likely saved lives.

The young woman and two friends, all between 18 and 20 years old, traveled from Kaduna State to Lagos in late May after a recruiter promised them legitimate restaurant work. Upon arriving in the Ajegunle area on May 23, the woman allegedly revealed her real plan: sending them to Ivory Coast for sex work.

One of the young women refused immediately. Instead of staying silent out of fear, she walked into a police station and reported what was happening.

Her bravery set off a rapid response from Lagos State Police. Commissioner Fatai Tijani transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department's specialized Anti-Human Trafficking unit for intensive investigation.

Detectives moved quickly, apprehending the suspected trafficker before she could move the women out of the country. The suspect had allegedly taken the young women to a motor park, preparing to facilitate their illegal transport across borders.
