Teen Swimmer Smashes 1,500m Freestyle World Record

Johannes Liebmann didn't just break the men's 1,500m freestyle world record. He demolished it.

The 19-year-old German star touched the wall at 14 minutes 26.79 seconds at the European Aquatics Championships in France on Saturday, slicing almost four seconds off the previous record set by American Bobby Finke at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In swimming, where races are often decided by hundredths of a second, that's an eternity.

Liebmann became the first man in history to dip under the 14 minute 30 second barrier in the grueling endurance event. His strategy was bold: start fast, break away from the pack early, and swim his own race.

"I'm just amazed, the time is incredible," Liebmann told Olympics.com after his swim. "I didn't think it was possible for me."

The teenager knew he was swimming well, but he had no idea he was making history until the final stretch. When the crowd rose to their feet with 200 to 300 meters remaining, he felt an extra burst of power surge through his tired muscles.

"I thought it was close, so I was a bit overthinking it, and the last 100 meters were so hard," he said. "But then just seeing the 14:26 is incredible."
