Teen Swims 4 Hours Through Rough Seas to Save Family

When strong winds blew their inflatable paddleboards out to sea near Quindalup, Australia, a 13-year-old boy made a split-second decision that would save his family's life.

The family of four was enjoying a holiday along the southwest coast when the weather turned dangerous. Within minutes, powerful gusts separated the boy from his mother and two siblings, pushing them farther into the ocean as his canoe started filling with water.

The teenager knew he had to reach shore fast. Wearing a life jacket, he started swimming against the wind, fighting the rough seas with everything he had.

For two hours, he pushed through the choppy waters with his life jacket on. Then he realized the flotation device was slowing him down too much.

Commander Paul Bresland from Cape Naturaliste Marine Rescue couldn't believe what happened next. The boy ditched his life jacket and swam for another two hours without it, knowing his family's survival depended on him reaching land.

"I thought, 'Mate, that is incredible,'" Bresland told ABC News.

The exhausted teen finally made it to shore and immediately raised the alarm. He gave rescuers detailed descriptions of the paddleboards, helping them launch a multi-agency search involving Western Australia state Water Police and a rescue helicopter.

Within an hour, crews found his family seven miles out in the Indian Ocean. His 47-year-old mother was struggling to keep his 8-year-old sister and 14-year-old brother clinging to their paddleboard in the rough waters.

"She just said, 'I'm struggling, I can't,' but she just said they're looking her in the eye, and she just kept going and kept them together," Bresland said. Rescuers pulled all three to safety.
