Teen Swims 4km Through Rough Seas to Save Family

When a family vacation turned into a fight for survival, one teenager refused to give up on the people he loved most.

A 13-year-old boy became a hero on Friday evening after swimming four kilometers through rough ocean waters to save his family from drowning off Western Australia's South West coast. The family had been enjoying their holiday at Quindalup, 250 kilometers south of Perth, when strong winds pushed their inflatable paddleboards and kayak far from shore.

The teenager first tried paddling his kayak back to land, but it took on water in the choppy seas. Faced with an impossible choice, he made the decision to swim for help.

For the first two hours, he swam wearing a life jacket. Then, realizing it was slowing him down, he made a gutsy call that rescue commander Paul Bresland called "superhuman."

"The brave fella thought he's not going to make it with a life jacket on, so he ditched it, and he swam the next two hours without a life jacket," Bresland said. "I thought, mate, that is incredible."

When the exhausted teen finally reached shore, he immediately raised the alarm. His detailed description of the kayak and paddleboard colors proved invaluable to search teams.

A multi-agency rescue operation launched within the hour, including Water Police, marine rescue volunteers, and a rescue helicopter. They found his 47-year-old mother, 12-year-old brother, and eight-year-old sister at 8:30pm, treading water and clinging to a paddleboard almost 14 kilometers offshore.

His mother had kept the younger children together for hours in the rough seas, never letting them drift apart despite her own exhaustion. "She just said, 'I'm struggling, I can't,' but she just said, they're looking her in the eye, and she just kept going and kept them together," Bresland recalled.

South West Police Inspector James Bradley praised the boy's actions as lifesaving. The fact that all family members wore life jackets also played a crucial role in their survival.

The family was treated at Busselton Health Campus and discharged over the weekend. Their first stop after leaving the hospital? Visiting the marine rescue crews to say thank you.
