Telford Adults Graduate, Head to University via Access Program

Adults in Telford are rewriting their futures through a program that's turning life experience into university degrees.

Learn Telford recently celebrated graduates who completed intensive Access to Higher Education programs during the 2023-24 academic year. The students gathered at Bishton Court for a graduation ceremony where they received certificates recognizing their achievement and upcoming university placements.

The one-year Access courses serve as bridges to higher education for adults who might lack traditional qualifications. Previous graduates have gone on to study nursing, midwifery, special educational needs, pharmacy, and education at universities throughout the country.

What makes these programs special is their design around real life. Classes happen during school hours, allowing parents to attend while children are in class. Students can choose between online and in-person learning with specialist tutors teaching face-to-face sessions.

The financial barrier dissolves too. Full funding loans are available for eligible students, and those loans get paid off once graduates complete their university degrees. That means no debt for finishing what you started.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds presented certificates at the ceremony and praised the graduates for their dedication. "Access programmes improve people's skills, raise aspirations and are a springboard to a very successful career," she said.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond individual success stories, these programs are changing what's possible in Telford communities. Students gain more than academic knowledge. They build confidence, reduce social isolation, and improve their overall wellbeing through the learning process.

The council's "Stay Near, Go Far" campaign reinforces that residents don't need to leave home to build meaningful careers. Local opportunities in education and training can launch professional journeys right from Telford.

New courses start in September, with Health Science Professions and Psychology programs still open for registration. University workshops and application support come built into the classroom experience, and graduates can enter university at year one without needing foundation years.

These adults are proving that the path to higher education doesn't have a single starting line, and it's never too late to cross the finish line into a new career.
