Tennessee Couple Adopts Siblings to Keep Family Together

A courtroom in Rutherford County, Tennessee erupted in cheers as a judge made two siblings officially part of the Pointer family forever.

Larry and Tammy Pointer, who go by Mr. Larry and Mrs. Tammy, stood surrounded by friends and family at the adoption hearing. The couple had fostered 20 children over the years, but this moment felt extra special because they were keeping a brother and sister together.

"It's a wonderful feeling," Mrs. Tammy said after the judge granted the adoption. "We know we have a village out here, and we're not in this alone."

The couple's journey started years ago when they both worked as school bus drivers for Nashville metro schools. Mrs. Tammy drove buses packed with 70 kids at a time without a monitor, learning firsthand how children need stable adults in their lives.

They didn't know it then, but those bus routes prepared them for something much bigger. After getting married, they decided to open their home to foster children who desperately needed families.

Youth Villages, an organization finding homes for foster children, says keeping siblings together remains one of their biggest challenges. Foster care assistant director Claire Moses explained that homes are sometimes divided by gender or simply don't have space for multiple children.

"Sometimes when siblings are removed from a home, the siblings they have are some of the most important people in their life," Moses said. Shared experiences make those bonds irreplaceable.

The judge got it exactly right when he told Mr. Larry and Mrs. Tammy that fostering and adopting is "such a selfless act." But what really makes this story shine is the packed courtroom. Dozens of people showed up to celebrate two kids getting the stability they deserve. That village Mrs. Tammy mentioned? They proved they're real, standing shoulder to shoulder in that hallway.

Mr. Larry joked that this family reunion looked nothing like their usual backyard cookouts with ribs and steaks. But the important part stayed the same: family growing stronger together.

"We can love on each other and learn how to grow together," Mrs. Tammy said, surrounded by everyone who matters most.
