Tennis Rookie Toby Samuel Wins Emotional Davis Cup Debut

Toby Samuel didn't expect to get so emotional playing tennis for his country, but the moment he stepped onto the court at London's sold-out Copper Box Arena, everything changed.

The 24-year-old British player won his Davis Cup debut on Saturday, coming from behind to defeat Ecuador's Andres Andrade in front of a roaring home crowd. Samuel admitted the experience caught him completely off guard.

"It almost felt like a bigger deal than playing any Slam for me," Samuel told BBC Sport after his 4-6 6-4 6-1 victory. The rising star has played at three Grand Slams this year, but nothing compared to wearing the Great Britain colors.

Samuel's journey to this moment makes his win even sweeter. Just nine months ago, he was ranked outside the world's top 250. Today he sits at 95th in the world, and he only got his chance to play after British number two Cameron Norrie pulled out with an injury on Friday.

The nerves showed early as Andrade raced to a 4-0 lead and took the first set. But Samuel found his footing in the second set and dominated the decider, winning it in just 28 minutes while dropping only one game.

"This was a big dream of mine and you could sort of tell because I got a bit nervous at the start," Samuel said. "But I got myself going and I am so happy I got the job done for Great Britain."

Teammate Arthur Fery followed with an equally impressive performance, defeating Alvaro Guillen Meza 7-5 6-0 to give Britain a 2-0 lead. Fery, playing his first home Davis Cup match since reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, celebrated the rare chance to compete as part of a team.
