Tens of Thousands March for Pride in Prague

Tens of thousands of people filled the streets of Prague on Saturday, transforming the Czech capital into a vibrant celebration of love, acceptance, and the ongoing fight for equality.

The march kicked off at Wenceslas Square around noon, with participants winding their way through the city before arriving at Stvanice island in the Vltava River. Musical performances and festivities continued well into the night, capping off the opening day of a week-long Pride festival.

This year's theme, "Times are changing," reflects both progress and the work still ahead. "The aim of the festival is to raise awareness of LGBT+ issues, to show how this community lives in the Czech Republic and that it is still waiting for equal rights," said Prague Pride director Kamila Frohlichova.

The celebration opened with a solemn moment. Marchers observed a minute of silence honoring victims of a van ramming attack near Berlin's Pride parade just two weeks earlier, which killed one person and injured 31 others.

Security was tight but unobtrusive. Hundreds of police officers lined the route alongside a de-escalation team, and organizers asked participants to carry banners by hand or use plastic poles instead of wooden ones. Police reported no major incidents throughout the day.

Even counter-demonstrators who gathered along part of the route didn't dampen the peaceful, joyful atmosphere.

The Ripple Effect

Prague's Pride march sends a message far beyond the Czech Republic's borders. In a region where LGBTQ+ rights still face significant challenges, tens of thousands choosing to show up and march together demonstrates the unstoppable momentum of acceptance and equality.

The week-long festival creates space for visibility, education, and connection. It shows LGBTQ+ youth they're not alone and reminds allies that their support matters.
