Terence Donovan, 90, Celebrated for 60-Year Acting Legacy

When Terence Donovan arrived in Australia from England as a teenager in the 1950s, he dreamed of being an entertainer. Six decades later, he leaves behind a legacy that transformed Australian television.

Donovan died peacefully in Melbourne at age 90, surrounded by family. His son Jason, also an accomplished actor, announced the news, calling his father his best friend and celebrating a life lived "to the max."

Born in 1935, Donovan made his Australian TV debut singing "I've Got You Under My Skin" on Channel 7's Live Variety Show in 1960. From there, he built a career spanning 167 episodes of Cop Shop, memorable roles in Division 4, The Man From Snowy River, and beloved parts in Neighbours and Home and Away.

But Donovan's greatest contribution may have been his fight for Australian storytelling. In 1970, he marched through Melbourne demanding local content quotas when just 1 percent of drama on Australian television was homegrown.

Jason shared touching memories of boogie boarding at Bondi Beach and road trips playing Beatles albums. He remembered his father as "complicated yet so simple, unique and limited edition," a man who always wanted his children to reach higher than he did.

Writer Nikki Gemmell, who worked with Donovan early in her career, remembered him as "an impossibly handsome man of integrity" who looked out for younger performers. That generosity defined him on and off screen.

Donovan raised Jason as a single father after divorce, prioritizing family while building his career. Their bond remained strong until the end, with Jason by his bedside in his final days at Cabrini Hospital Melbourne.
