Tesla Plans 100 GW Solar Factory in Texas by 2029

America's solar manufacturing capacity could triple in the next three years if Tesla and SpaceX successfully execute their most ambitious clean energy project yet.

Elon Musk announced plans for his companies to build 100 gigawatts of annual solar panel manufacturing capacity in the United States by 2029. That's nearly double the entire country's current production capacity of 60 gigawatts expected in 2026.

The timing couldn't be better. Power demand is skyrocketing across America due to the artificial intelligence boom, with data centers consuming enormous amounts of electricity. Solar power is now the cheapest option for new energy capacity in the US and has provided more than half of all new power additions.

Tesla has already ordered $2.9 billion worth of manufacturing equipment from Chinese suppliers Maxwell, S.C New Energy, and Laplace. If delivered by November 2026, the equipment would qualify for tariff exemptions designed to boost American solar manufacturing.

The scale of this project is staggering. A facility producing 100 gigawatts annually would require roughly 1,200 megawatts of continuous power supply just to operate. That's enough electricity to power a small city.

Texas appears ready to roll out the welcome mat. The state passed Senate Bill 6 in 2025, creating a faster approval process for massive facilities requiring more than 75 megawatts of power. The new framework could cut interconnection times from two years to just months.

The Ripple Effect

This project represents more than just one company's ambitions. It's part of a broader American manufacturing renaissance sparked by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which has already helped boost US solar production from minimal levels to competitive global standing.

China currently dominates global solar manufacturing with 1,156 gigawatts of capacity installed by the end of 2024. But America is catching up faster than many experts predicted, thanks to companies willing to invest billions in domestic production.

Tesla has surprised skeptics before. The company built massive manufacturing facilities in China and the United States far faster than critics thought possible. While the company has missed deadlines on self-driving cars and SpaceX hasn't yet sent people to Mars, their track record on building factories is strong.

The factory would create thousands of jobs in manufacturing and installation while helping America meet its growing energy needs with clean power. Energy experts who spoke with industry publications believe the timeline is aggressive but achievable with the right partnerships and regulatory support.

Chinese equipment manufacturers like SC-Solar and Jinchen Machinery have installed over 800 gigawatts and 500 gigawatts of capacity worldwide respectively. Their integration teams can get production lines running within three months of delivery, giving Tesla a realistic path to rapid deployment.

When America's solar factories hit full production, millions of homes and businesses will have access to affordable clean energy made right here at home.
