Tesla Signs Massive 1 TWh Solar Deal in Arizona

One of the biggest clean energy deals in American history just happened in the Arizona desert, and it's powering up hope for a greener future.

Tesla signed a corporate power purchase agreement with international energy producer ContourGlobal for Project Sterling, a hybrid solar and battery facility that will generate approximately 1 terawatt-hour of renewable electricity each year. That's enough clean energy to power roughly 90,000 homes annually.

The Arizona project combines 450 megawatts of solar panels with 360 megawatts of battery storage capacity. Construction crews are gearing up to break ground later this year, with full operations expected by 2028.

What makes this deal particularly smart is how the power will travel. Project Sterling connects to Arizona's grid but holds special transmission rights to send electricity all the way to California, where Tesla's operations will soak up the clean energy.

ContourGlobal CEO Antonio Cammisecra called it "one of the largest of its kind in U.S. renewable history," highlighting how major corporations are betting big on sustainable power. For ContourGlobal, Project Sterling represents their largest renewable energy asset ever.

The company has already started the behind-the-scenes work, ordering equipment and preparing the site throughout 2025. When complete, the facility will deliver about 90% of its total energy output directly to Tesla through the long-term agreement.
