A trip to the ATM turned into the ultimate test of character for a Texas barber, and he passed with flying colors.

The Lewisville man spotted a bag sitting on top of a Bank of America ATM and opened it to find it packed with cash. Instead of walking away with what would have been an easy score, he immediately called the Lewisville Police Department.

The barber, who chose to remain anonymous, first tried to solve the mystery himself. Information on the bag suggested it might belong to the nearby Chick-fil-A, so he took it to the restaurant's supervisor. They confirmed the money wasn't theirs.

By the time a police officer arrived, the man had also found a smaller bag containing 19 checks. He handed everything over without a second thought.

Back at the station, Police Chief Brook Rollins called for backup. Protocol required officers to double count the cash and then run it through an electric currency counter. A receipt inside the bag showed the exact amount: $128,514.

After counting, police confirmed not a single dollar was missing. Investigators determined the money belonged to Bank of America, and a Brinks technician had accidentally left it behind after servicing the ATM.

"I've had cases where good Samaritans have turned in property that they found, wallets, IDs, things like that," Detective Gina Miller told CBS Texas. "But in the case of $128,000, I've never had somebody turn in that kind of money before."

Sunny's Take

The barber's honesty stands out in a world where many would be tempted to pocket such a windfall. Detective Miller noted that while some people might think "finders keepers" applies, taking found money isn't just wrong, it's illegal.

Police Chief Rollins praised the man for knowing the right thing to do and doing it without hesitation. The Lewisville Police Department plans to honor him at a private ceremony, respecting his wish to stay out of the spotlight.

Sometimes the biggest rewards come from doing what's right, even when no one would have known the difference.
