Texas Beach Cleanup Program Celebrates 40 Years Strong

For four decades, everyday Texans have been rolling up their sleeves to keep their coastline beautiful, and the results are nothing short of remarkable.

The Texas General Land Office's Adopt-A-Beach program is marking 40 years of coastal care this spring. Since the first cleanup in 1986, more than 600,000 volunteers have picked up over 10,000 tons of trash while cleaning 11,800 miles of Texas beaches.

The milestone celebration happens April 18, 2026, when volunteers will gather at 21 locations stretching from Sea Rim State Park to Boca Chica. Registration is free and open to everyone, residents and visitors alike.

"Please join us as we continue to work together to keep Texas beaches clean and our habitats thriving," said Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham. The cleanup runs from 8:30 am to noon, making it easy for families to participate on a Saturday morning.

The program doesn't stop at twice-yearly major events. Adopt-A-Beach coordinates smaller cleanups in February and helps local groups organize special cleanups throughout the year, creating a year-round network of coastal stewards.

The Ripple Effect

The impact goes far beyond removing trash from the sand. Each cleanup educates communities about how marine debris affects both people and ocean ecosystems, creating a ripple of awareness that extends to everyday habits.

The program has attracted support from major sponsors including Chevron, ExxonMobil, Valero, and environmental groups like Ocean Conservancy. This partnership between volunteers, corporations, and conservation organizations shows what's possible when communities unite around protecting natural spaces.

Volunteers have transformed Texas beaches into cleaner, safer habitats for both wildlife and the millions of people who visit the coast each year. That's 40 years of consistent progress, one cleanup at a time.
