This success story reaches far beyond one hot week in July. Since the devastating 2021 Winter Storm Uri grid failure, Texas has transformed into the nation's fastest-growing market for solar and battery storage.
The state now hosts 53,568 megawatts of installed solar capacity and 29,163 megawatt-hours of storage. Even more impressive, another 39,053 MW of clean energy projects are expected to come online over the next five years.
ERCOT is also pioneering a new approach to handle explosive demand growth. The grid operator recently launched "Batch Zero," the nation's first system for evaluating large electricity users like data centers as a group rather than one by one. This innovative process will help Texas manage more than 438,000 MW of connection requests, with 89% coming from data centers alone.
The risk of blackouts remains remarkably low. ERCOT estimates less than a 6% chance of grid emergencies even during August and September, the hottest months ahead.
