Texas Softball Wins First SEC Tournament Championship

The University of Texas softball team ended a 21-year wait in spectacular fashion Saturday night, defeating third-ranked Alabama 7-1 to capture their first SEC Tournament Championship.

The fifth-ranked Longhorns hadn't won a conference tournament title since 2005. Under head coach Mike White, they'd come close twice before, but this year everything clicked at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky.

Junior pitcher Teagan Kavan put on a masterclass performance, striking out 12 Alabama batters across seven innings. Her dozen strikeouts marked the most by any pitcher in an SEC Tournament championship game since 2021, and she worked the team out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning with back-to-back strikeouts that silenced the Crimson Tide's momentum.

The offense came alive behind SEC Player of the Year Katie Stewart, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and crushed her 25th home run of the season. The junior first baseman has been unstoppable all year, leading her team when it mattered most.

After Alabama grabbed an early 1-0 lead, Texas responded with seven unanswered runs. Pinch hitter Victoria Hunter delivered the tying RBI single in the second inning, and center fielder Kayden Henry gave Texas the lead moments later with a bases-loaded fielder's choice.

The Longhorns never looked back, adding insurance runs through the middle innings before Stewart's solo shot in the sixth put the game out of reach. Texas finished with 13 hits against one of the nation's toughest pitching staffs.
