Texas Solar Boom Shows Path Forward for Clean Energy Growth

Sabah Bayatli, CEO of San Antonio-based OCI Energy, has found a bright spot in this challenge. His company develops utility-scale solar and battery storage projects across the country, and he's witnessed firsthand how one state is doing things remarkably different.

Texas has become the exception to America's grid connection crisis. The state's ERCOT grid has already connected 102 gigawatts of solar, wind, and storage projects using a streamlined approach that sidesteps lengthy federal oversight. While developers in other states wait eight years just to get their projects studied, Texas is racing ahead.

"From the interconnection perspective, there is ERCOT, and there is everybody else," Bayatli explained on the Factor This podcast. "Across the board, outside ERCOT, interconnection is the number one challenge for any developer."

The difference comes down to geography and governance. Because ERCOT's grid doesn't cross state lines, it uses a "Connect and Manage" approach that lets projects come online faster. Other regions, subject to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission oversight, are now adopting similar frameworks after seeing Texas's success.

But speed isn't the only ingredient in OCI Energy's recipe. Bayatli recommends developers spread their investments across multiple power markets, studying each region's unique challenges and opportunities. Some projects won't work out, but diversification keeps companies moving forward despite uncertainty.
