Texas Solar Plant Powers Toyota's Clean Energy Goals

Toyota just locked in clean power from a solar farm nearly twice the size of Disneyland, marking a major step toward sustainable manufacturing in America.

The Norton Solar Project in Runnels County, Texas, finished construction last October and is already pumping 159 megawatts of clean electricity into the grid. Toyota Motor North America partnered with energy developer Avantus to secure all the power from the massive solar installation through a virtual power purchase agreement.

The deal lets Toyota match its electricity use with solar power without building its own solar farm. This approach, called a VPPA, is becoming the go-to strategy for major companies serious about cutting carbon emissions while focusing on what they do best.

Toyota Tsusho America, the company's trading division, structured the agreement to help Toyota Motor North America hit its clean energy targets. The partnership demonstrates how automakers are walking the walk on sustainability, not just in the vehicles they build but in how they build them.

The project brought nearly 250 construction jobs to rural Texas during its busiest phase. UK-based Renewable Energy Systems handled the engineering and construction, while Avantus managed development and will operate the facility for years to come.

The Ripple Effect

Norton Solar represents just one piece of a much bigger renewable energy puzzle taking shape across Texas and the Southwest. Avantus currently manages about 24 gigawatts of solar projects and 75 gigawatt-hours of battery storage across California and the desert Southwest, enough capacity to power millions of homes.

Runnels County will see ongoing economic benefits throughout the solar plant's operational life, from property taxes to maintenance jobs. These rural communities often become unexpected winners in the clean energy transition, gaining stable revenue streams that support schools and infrastructure.

The Texas grid, famous for its independent spirit, continues absorbing massive amounts of solar power as costs drop and corporate demand rises. Major manufacturers choosing Texas renewable energy sends a clear market signal that clean power makes business sense.

Toyota's move reflects a broader shift among automakers racing to green their entire supply chains, not just their tailpipes. When the company producing millions of vehicles annually commits to renewable energy at this scale, it proves clean power can handle industrial demands.
