Texas Tech's JT Toppin Drops 31 to Upset Top-Ranked Arizona

When the game was on the line and Arizona's entire defense collapsed on him, JT Toppin made the winning play not with his scoring touch, but with his basketball IQ.

The Texas Tech forward had already dominated overtime with a series of unstoppable tip-ins and post moves. But when he got the ball one more time, he whipped a pass to the perimeter where Donovan Atwell buried a crucial 3-pointer that sealed a 78-75 upset of top-ranked Arizona on Saturday.

"I knew he was going to be over there," Toppin said after the game. "We work on that every day."

That unselfish play capped arguably Toppin's best performance of the season: 31 points on 13-of-22 shooting, 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. The 6-foot-9 preseason All-American played 44 minutes and 19 seconds of the 45-minute contest, showing incredible stamina in one of the most physical matchups of the college basketball season.

The victory marked just the third time in school history that Texas Tech has beaten a No. 1 ranked team. It's also the Red Raiders' third straight win as they navigate one of the toughest conference schedules in the country.

Toppin wasn't alone in the upset. Christian Anderson hit six 3-pointers for 19 points, and Atwell scored 11 including two clutch shots down the stretch. But the All-American forward set the tone all game long, notching his 16th double-double of the season and 47th of his career.

Even Arizona's players praised Toppin's excellence. Forward Tobe Awaka, who had 16 points and 12 rebounds himself, marveled at Toppin's quick second jump and uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time.

Toppin has now scored at least 10 points in 21 consecutive games and is averaging 21.9 points and 11 rebounds per game. But numbers only tell part of the story of a player who combines talent with tireless work ethic.
