Texas Wins on Buzzer-Beater to Keep March Dream Alive

When the pressure of March Madness threatened to end their season Tuesday night, Texas senior Tramon Mark refused to let the dream die.

With the score tied at 66 and just seconds remaining in their First Four matchup against NC State, Mark rose up from the right wing and drained a smooth jumper with 1.1 seconds on the clock. The ball swished through the net, and Texas survived 68-66 in front of a packed crowd in Dayton, Ohio.

"I guard T-Mark every day in practice, and he makes those shots on me," Texas guard Chendall Weaver said after the game. For Mark, it was his fourth career game winner with less than five seconds remaining, proving once again that some players are simply built for clutch moments.

The victory wasn't pretty, but it was powerful. Texas struggled for long stretches, failing to make a single field goal in the final 8:40 of the first half. NC State clawed back from a comfortable deficit and tied the game with just 20.8 seconds left, sending nerves through the Longhorns bench.

But this is why teams fight all season for a chance at March. The No. 11 seed Longhorns now advance to face No. 6 BYU Thursday in Portland, Oregon, with their season intact and momentum on their side.

Coach Sean Miller has been here before. Last year, he won a First Four game with Xavier, and he knows the value of surviving when you're not at your best. "There's power in playing a game in this tournament," Miller said. "Our nerves can settle through Game 1. You can gain confidence."

Tuesday night reminded us why March Madness captures hearts every year. It's not always the best team that advances, but the team that refuses to quit when the moment gets biggest.

Weaver recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, stepping up when leading scorer Dailyn Swain struggled. Mark delivered when the game was on the line. These weren't superhuman performances, just players rising to meet the moment when everything was at stake.

Miller's team won because they defended brilliantly for 39 minutes and made two incredible shots in the final minute. Sometimes that's all it takes. Sometimes surviving is the same as thriving.

The Longhorns have a quick turnaround and a long flight to the West Coast ahead. But they're still dancing, still dreaming, and that's all any team can ask for in March.
