Thailand Eyes 2035 AI Hub Status with New Institute
Thailand launches a university-led AI institute aiming to transform the country into Southeast Asia's AI solution hub by 2035. The initiative focuses on practical business applications, humanoid robotics, and training a new generation of AI talent.
Thailand just took a major step toward becoming Southeast Asia's artificial intelligence powerhouse, and it's betting on homegrown talent to make it happen.
The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce opened the UTCC AI Institute on Monday, designed to help Thai businesses harness AI technology while positioning the country as a regional leader in robotics and data innovation. Unlike many tech initiatives that focus on building infrastructure for foreign companies, this one aims to create real economic value for local businesses.
Djitt Laowattana, chairman of the Robotics and AI Committee at the Thai Chamber of Commerce, laid out an ambitious vision at the launch. He explained that 85% of the global AI market focuses on applying AI solutions rather than developing the underlying technology, giving Thailand a clear path to success.
"We are entering an AI economy," Laowattana said, emphasizing that Thailand shouldn't just host foreign data centers but should run AI models locally to generate business value and protect data sovereignty.
The country already attracts significant data center investment from Western and Chinese companies. Now the goal is transforming that presence into a thriving local industry that keeps money and expertise within Thailand's borders.

The Ripple Effect
The institute's impact extends beyond tech companies. UTCC President Thanavath Phonvichai announced the university now integrates AI into 100% of its courses, preparing students across all majors for an AI-driven economy.
The school aims to increase the proportion of students studying AI and information technology from 1% to 10%. That could mean thousands more graduates entering the workforce with practical AI skills tailored to Thai business needs.
Thailand also sees opportunity in humanoid robotics manufacturing. With industrial robot costs dropping dramatically over 30 years and new government tax incentives encouraging automation, the country could become a regional hub for specialized robot software, particularly for healthcare and security applications.
The AI Entrepreneur Association of Thailand reports the country's AI market is worth 50 billion baht, but local companies currently capture only 2 to 3 billion baht of that revenue. The institute aims to change that equation by helping small Thai businesses partner strategically with larger enterprises while developing their own AI capabilities.
The initiative includes sustainability commitments too. Leaders emphasized that Thailand must prioritize green energy solutions for power-hungry data centers and AI operations, targeting at least 30% renewable energy for digital infrastructure through smart grids, solar farms, and energy storage.
UTCC's five-year roadmap includes the Thai Industry AI Transformation Initiative, an AI Solution Factory, and an AI Talent for Thailand project. These programs connect education, research, industry, and international networks to create a complete ecosystem for AI development.
Thailand's journey from AI consumer to AI hub shows how strategic planning and education investment can transform a country's technological future.
