Thailand Resumes Direct Flights to New Zealand After 6 Years

Travelers between Thailand and New Zealand will soon enjoy nonstop flights again as Thai Airways prepares to restart service after a six-year pandemic pause.

Prime Ministers Anutin Charnvirakul and Christopher Luxon announced the return of direct Bangkok-Auckland flights during talks in New Zealand on Friday. Thai Airways suspended the route in 2020 after operating it for more than 30 years when COVID-19 grounded global travel.

The flights will resume in 2027, making it easier for families to reunite, businesses to connect, and tourists to explore both countries without lengthy layovers. New Zealand's prime minister called the news "great for tourism and trade," noting it will restore vital air freight links and strengthen connections throughout Asia.

The two leaders went further than just flights. They committed to tripling bilateral trade by 2045, targeting roughly $7.5 billion in annual commerce between the nations. That represents a massive jump from current levels and signals serious investment in the partnership.

The strategic partnership also includes New Zealand's support for Thailand's bid to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. That backing could help Thailand gain membership in the influential group of developed nations, opening doors to new development resources and international credibility.
