Thailand Tackles Food Future With Biotech and Innovation

Thailand is racing to revolutionize its food system before climate change and an aging workforce create a crisis that threatens the nation's agricultural heritage.

At the Future Food Leader Summit 2026 in Bangkok, industry leaders unveiled an urgent roadmap to transform Thai agriculture using biotechnology, gene editing, and advanced farming technologies. The initiative aims to secure food production for decades to come while protecting both farmers and the environment.

The challenge is real and immediate. Thailand's farming population is shrinking and getting older, with fewer young people choosing agricultural careers. Meanwhile, irregular weather patterns, pest outbreaks, droughts, and floods are making traditional farming increasingly difficult.

Santi Aphakat, chief executive of Bio Buddy and Tastebud Lab, emphasized that food security now extends beyond human nutrition. The planet's health has become equally critical to sustainable food production, requiring a complete rethinking of how Thailand grows and distributes food.

The solution involves tailored support for farmers of all sizes. Large operations need help navigating regulations, medium-sized farms require better access to technology and cost-saving strategies, and small farmers are being connected directly to consumers through e-commerce platforms that cut out expensive middlemen.

The Agricultural Research Development Agency is funding research projects to develop climate-resilient crops and livestock. Scientists are working on food safety improvements and functional foods that add nutritional value while meeting stricter international quality standards.

Thailand already has a strong domestic food production system, but experts say the country needs more expertise in sourcing quality raw materials and training skilled professionals to supervise advanced operations. The Food and Agriculture Organization's Bangkok office stressed that successful transformation requires science investment, innovation funding, and capacity building across four key areas: health, economy, society, and environment.
