Thailand's 'Last Titan' Is Longest Dinosaur Ever Found in SE Asia

A local Thai resident peered at the edge of a drying pond in 2016 and spotted something extraordinary: massive bones that would turn out to be the largest dinosaur ever found in Southeast Asia.

Meet Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis, a gentle giant that stretched 90 feet long and weighed around 30 tons. That's heavier than five full-grown elephants and about as long as a basketball court.

Paleontologists from University College London working with Thai researchers uncovered the complete picture in Chaiyaphum province in northeastern Thailand. Among the fossils they recovered was a thigh bone measuring 6.5 feet tall, roughly the height of a basketball player.

The dinosaur belonged to a group called somphospondylan sauropods, the famous long-necked plant eaters that once roamed every continent on Earth. This particular species lived between 100 and 120 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, when the region looked nothing like today's lush Thailand.

Back then, northeastern Thailand was semi-arid and hot, dotted with river systems where crocodiles, fish, and flying pterosaurs shared the landscape. The titan's massive body and long neck weren't just for reaching treetops but also helped it shed heat in the scorching environment.

Why This Inspires

The name Nagatitan honors the mythical Naga, a serpent-like creature revered in Thai culture and Buddhism, often associated with water. By blending local mythology with scientific discovery, researchers created a bridge between Thailand's cultural heritage and its paleontological legacy.

This discovery might be the last of its kind from the region. The rock layers above where these fossils were found became a shallow sea later in the Cretaceous period, meaning conditions likely prevented later dinosaurs from fossilizing.

The find proves that these magnificent creatures thrived across the globe, adapting to vastly different environments from South America's wet forests to Thailand's dry plains.
