🦸 Hero Alert

For over 30 years, Community Led Animal Welfare has brought free veterinary care to Johannesburg's underserved townships. Now they're doing it without running water or electricity.

In a converted mine building in Durban Deep, Johannesburg, volunteer Michelle Weedman treats an injured dog while keeping one eye on the solar battery. The Community Led Animal Welfare clinic has operated without municipal water or electricity for more than a decade, yet continues serving thousands of pets whose owners can't afford veterinary care.

CLAW was founded over 30 years ago when township communities had zero access to veterinary services. Today, the organization provides free basic care, vaccinations, and preventative treatments to animals across Johannesburg's most underserved areas.

"CLAW started because there was no veterinary care in the township areas at that time for animals that were greatly in need," Weedman told Our City News. The organization now handles everything from treating injuries to educating pet owners about responsible animal care.

Water arrives by truck each day and gets stored in tanks. Solar panels power the microscope, scale, and fridge. Staff members stay conscious of every light they turn on, knowing the battery won't last forever.

The work extends far beyond treating sick animals. Education remains central to CLAW's mission, especially in communities where families struggle to feed themselves, let alone their pets.

"We try to educate them around responsible pet ownership," Weedman explained. "Starting with basic things like vaccinations, shelter and feeding."

Preventative care makes a huge difference. Weedman emphasized that tick and flea prevention matters everywhere, whether you live in a township or in wealthy Sandton.

The Ripple Effect

Despite operating in conditions most veterinary clinics would consider impossible, CLAW's team witnesses powerful moments of compassion daily. Residents bring injured strays, adopt cats and dogs, and learn to provide better care for their animals.

The organization has also navigated safety challenges from illegal mining in the area. At one point, large holes appeared in nearby roads, creating hazards for nighttime drivers without street lights.

Funding remains the biggest obstacle to expanding services. "If you had double the volunteers and staff we have, what one could actually achieve would be incredible," Weedman said.

With more support, CLAW could reach even more communities where pets and their owners need help most. For now, the team continues showing up each day, solar panels charged and water tanks full, proving that dedication doesn't need perfect conditions to make a difference.
