Three Medical and Legal Scholarships Open in Malone, NY

Three families in a small New York town are turning their gratitude into opportunity, offering scholarships that could shape the future of rural healthcare and legal services.
The Academic Board of Trustees at Franklin Academy in Malone announced three postgraduate scholarships for students entering or currently attending medical or law school. The deadline is April 15, with awards announced in June.
The Alfred A. Hartmann, Sr. Medical Scholarship honors a physician who served Franklin County from the 1940s until his death in 2000. The scholarship, established through M. Erma Scanlon's will, supports medical students who call Franklin County home.
Dr. Gerald and Carla Cahill created the second medical scholarship after decades of service to their community. Dr. Cahill spent years as a family physician, prison doctor, and school physician for Malone Central Schools. His wife Carla worked at Alice Hyde Medical Center from age 18, eventually becoming a registered nurse.

The Hon. Robert G. Main, Sr. and Jr. Legal Scholarship recognizes two generations of judges who shaped New York's Fourth Judicial District. Judge Main, Sr. served 28 years on the Supreme Court, while his son spent 34 years as Franklin County judge and surrogate before retiring in 2021.
The Ripple Effect
These scholarships do more than cover tuition. They're designed to bring talented professionals back to rural communities that desperately need them. Applications should highlight plans to return to the North Country after graduation, addressing a critical shortage of doctors and lawyers in rural areas.
Students can apply with a letter or resume detailing their academic performance, why they're seeking support, and their career aspirations. References should accompany the application in sealed envelopes. Applications go to the Academic Board of Trustees of Franklin Academy, Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 44, Malone, NY 12953.
