TikTok Video Leads Scientists to New Blind Eel in India

Scientists just discovered a brand new species of blind eel living in total darkness beneath northern India, and it all started with a TikTok video.

In 2024, researchers spotted a strange clip on social media showing a pale, unusual fish that had accidentally been pumped out of a borewell near the India-Nepal border. The fish looked unlike anything they'd seen before, so lead researcher Akshay Khandekar and his team from the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation decided to investigate.

Finding the creature wasn't easy. The team spent a week in Bihar, hand-pumping more than 15 different borewells and extracting roughly 2,500 litres of water before they finally captured three specimens.

What they found was extraordinary. The tiny eel, measuring just 40 millimeters long, turned out to be not just a new species but an entirely new genus never before known to science.

The fish is perfectly adapted for life in pitch-black underground aquifers. It has no body pigment, giving it a ghostly, translucent appearance. Its eyes have shrunk to tiny dots covered by skin, since sight is useless in permanent darkness.

High-resolution CT scans revealed even more surprises. The eel has no ribs at all and possesses a unique arrangement of vertebrae and fin rays that sets it apart from every other known eel species.

The researchers named it Gangaichthys indonepalicus. The first part comes from "Ganga" (the Ganges River in Sanskrit) and "ichthys" (Greek for fish), while the second part honors its home along the India-Nepal border.

This discovery proves that our planet still holds countless mysteries, even in seemingly ordinary places like the soil beneath our feet. While southern India is known for underground creatures, this is the first subterranean fish ever found in the vast northern plains.

The finding suggests that entire hidden ecosystems may exist in underground aquifers across the region, waiting to be discovered. It's a reminder that exploration and wonder aren't just about distant planets or deep oceans.
