Tokyo Artist Transforms Trash Into Stunning Hotel Art

What looks like a galaxy of colorful discs floating above Tokyo's Trunk(Hotel) Cat Street started its life as something most people would throw away.

Artist Yuko Nishikawa created her "Chromonaut" installation from discarded photo studio backgrounds, pulping them and mixing them with bookbinding glue to form sculptural art. The multicolored pieces now greet guests sipping cocktails beneath them, transforming the hotel's atmosphere into something magical.

The installation runs through September 8th, giving visitors a few more weeks to experience the unique artwork firsthand. Each piece carries the hidden history of the photo shoots and creative projects that once used those backgrounds.

Nishikawa says the transformation process itself fascinates her as much as the final result. "Upcycling or introducing the materials in a new form, that kind of transformation is really interesting because there is already a story within the materials," she explains.

The materials she works with aren't just random trash. They're objects that already lived full lives serving one creative purpose before finding new meaning in her hands.

Why This Inspires

Nishikawa's work reminds us that creativity doesn't require expensive materials or perfect conditions. The backgrounds that photographers tossed aside contained untapped potential waiting for someone to see it differently.

Her installation also challenges how we think about waste. In a world drowning in discarded materials, artists like Nishikawa show us that "garbage" is often just a failure of imagination.

The hotel setting makes her message even more powerful. Luxury guests surrounded by high-end cocktails are literally looking up at repurposed trash, reimagined as beauty.

Every colorful disc hanging above those hotel guests carries a double story: the photos it once helped create and the art it became afterward.
