Tour de France Rider Saved by Barrier at Cliff Edge

When American cyclist Sepp Kuss crashed during Saturday's Tour de France mountain stage, a safety barrier literally stood between him and a steep Alpine cliff. The timing couldn't have been more perfect.

Kuss was leading Stage 20, the race's penultimate day, when he rounded a sweeping corner on a mountainous road. He understeered wide and slammed into a low concrete barrier just as the catch fence ended.

On the other side of that barrier was a dramatic drop-off down the French Alps. The fence stopped exactly where it needed to, catching Kuss at the last possible moment.

It was actually Kuss's second crash of the day. The first time, he managed to keep his lead and continue racing without losing position.

This second crash cost him more. He had to give up first place and finished the stage in third, disappointing for a rider who was on track for his first stage win since 2021.

The Bright Side

While losing the lead stung, Kuss walked away from an accident that could have ended very differently. The safety measures put in place along the Tour de France route worked exactly as intended, protecting riders on some of the most dangerous terrain in professional cycling.

These mountain stages showcase the incredible skill and bravery of Tour de France riders. They navigate steep climbs, sharp descents, and narrow roads at high speeds, all while competing against the world's best cyclists.

The catch fence represents years of safety improvements in professional cycling. Race organizers have learned from past accidents to better protect athletes racing through challenging terrain.

For Kuss, there will be other chances to win stages. Saturday reminded everyone that making it home safely matters most.
