Township Teacher's Nudge Leads to Two World Cup Wins

A teacher's gentle push in a New Brighton township classroom changed the trajectory of South African rugby forever.

Mzwandile Stick didn't choose rugby. His primary school teacher, Mavuso Mafu, chose it for him when sports schedules collided on Wednesday afternoons in the Eastern Cape. Raised by a single mother working tirelessly to provide in their township, Stick had no way of knowing that nudge would lead to two Rugby World Cup coaching titles.

"In the townships, we didn't have distinct sports seasons," Stick told Roc Nation. "The teachers would battle over which sport you should play. Mafu chose rugby for me and I will always be grateful because he really understood the game."

That seed grew into something remarkable. Stick became a standout player in rugby sevens, captaining the Blitzboks to their first-ever World Rugby Sevens Series title in 2009. His leadership skills shone so brightly on the field that the transition to coaching felt natural when he retired in 2013.

Within two years of hanging up his boots, Stick led the Eastern Province U19 side to a historic provincial title in 2015. The achievement fast-tracked him into the Springbok coaching setup, though the path wasn't smooth.

After a difficult 2016 season, Stick was demoted to the U20 team. But when Rassie Erasmus took over as head coach in 2018, he brought Stick back, recognizing his unique expertise. That faith paid off with World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023.

Stick credits his early days organizing beach rugby games during holidays and running team logistics while his classmates focused on final period lessons. "The teachers used to make fun of me because I wasn't focusing on class," he recalled. "I was already calculating numbers and planning the afternoon training session."
