Massive tabletop scale model showing detailed miniature buildings across entire New York City layout

Truck Driver Builds 1,350 Square Foot Model of NYC

🤯 Mind Blown

A delivery truck driver spent 20 years creating a miniature version of every single building in New York City out of balsa wood and glue. His obsessive labor of love just landed in a museum exhibition running through 2026.

Joe Macken started with one building in 2004 and couldn't stop until he'd recreated all of New York City.

The truck driver from Clifton Park, New York, built a miniature replica of 30 Rockefeller Plaza out of balsa wood as a hobby project. The next day, he built another building. Then another.

Twenty years later, Macken had created 320 sections spanning 1,350 square feet. Each section represents about one square mile of the city, complete with wooden buildings, painted parks, and tiny artificial trees.

The model includes nearly a million structures covering all five boroughs, plus parts of New Jersey and Nassau County. When Macken ran out of room at home, he rented a storage unit to house his growing creation.

His inspiration came from a first grade field trip to the Queens Museum, where he saw The Panorama of the City of New York, a massive 9,335-square-foot model built for the 1964 World's Fair. That childhood wonder stayed with him for three decades.

After moving 150 miles away from the city he loved, Macken found a unique way to cope with the distance. "I wanted to keep it with me," he told the New York Times. "So I figured I'd better build it."

He worked on the model almost every day, using humble materials like Elmer's glue, acrylic paint, and balsa wood cut with an X-Acto knife. The total cost over two decades was about $20,000.

Last summer, videos of Macken's model went viral on TikTok. Commenters predicted it belonged in a museum, and they were right.

Sunny's Take

When museum staff first saw the model, they stood around squealing with delight. "Look, there's our museum!" they shouted, spotting familiar landmarks throughout the miniature cityscape.

Chief curator Elisabeth Sherman describes it as "witnessing creativity" and watching how Macken transformed complex architecture into art using simple materials. Museum visitors now use binoculars to spot their own neighborhoods and homes.

Sherman says Macken insisted on including every single building for one heartwarming reason. He never wanted someone to visit and not be able to find where they live and see their own story represented.

The exhibition "He Built This City: Joe Macken's Model" opened in February at the Museum of the City of New York. Macken never imagined his daily hobby would end up on public display, but his dedication to capturing every detail of the city he loves now inspires thousands of visitors through summer 2026.
