Tulum Named World's Happiest Travel Destination

When travelers write about Tulum, they can't stop using words like "happy" and "joy."

Irish travel insurance company JustCover analyzed more than a million written reviews from tourists visiting destinations worldwide. They scanned comments about national parks, resorts, entertainment venues, and urban areas, searching for vocabulary that revealed genuine happiness.

Tulum earned a perfect 100 out of 100 on their "Happy Place Score." No other destination in the world matched it.

The small beach town on Mexico's Caribbean coast has become a beloved alternative to bustling Cancún. While Cancún draws crowds to massive all-inclusive resorts, Tulum offers boutique hotels, preserved Maya ruins perched on seaside cliffs, and a thriving wellness scene.

Visitors come for the cenotes and lazy rivers. They stay for the food, with several Tulum restaurants earning mentions in the Michelin Guide. Nature reserves and eco-tourism adventures add to the appeal.

Travel + Leisure recognized two Tulum properties on its 2025 Best Resorts in Mexico list: Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya and La Zebra Tulum. The town has mastered the balance between relaxation and adventure that modern travelers crave.

Mexico claimed another spot in the top 10 as well. Oaxaca ranked third globally, praised for its vibrant food markets and deep Indigenous culture.

The Ripple Effect

Tulum's recognition reflects a broader shift in how people want to travel. Visitors increasingly seek destinations that nourish their wellbeing rather than just entertain them. They want authentic cultural experiences, connection to nature, and spaces that genuinely make them feel good.

The study's findings also highlight Mexico's rising star in global tourism. With two cities in the top three, the country is proving it offers more than beautiful beaches. It delivers experiences that create lasting happiness.

Other destinations rounding out the top 10 included Soufrière in Saint Lucia, Las Vegas, Maui, New York City, Cappadocia in Turkey, Rio de Janeiro, Chicago, and Toronto. Each scored high for unique reasons, but none matched Tulum's perfect rating.

For travelers planning their next getaway, the message is clear: happiness might just be waiting on Mexico's Caribbean coast.
