Turkey and Ethiopia Team Up on Africa Climate Action

Two nations separated by geography but united by purpose are joining forces to amplify Africa's voice in the global climate conversation.

Turkey's Zero Waste Foundation and Ethiopia have launched a groundbreaking partnership focused on COP31 priorities and Africa's climate agenda. The collaboration emerged from high-level meetings in Addis Ababa in June 2026, where Turkish and Ethiopian leaders mapped out a vision for inclusive climate action.

At the heart of this partnership is a planned Zero Waste Forum that will serve as Africa's platform for climate solutions. The forum will bring together governments, international organizations, local authorities, universities, civil society groups, and businesses to tackle waste management, sustainable cities, and green development financing.

Samed Ağırbaş, president of the Zero Waste Foundation and Turkey's COP31 climate champion, met with key Ethiopian officials to strengthen cooperation. His discussions with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos focused on practical climate solutions like resource efficiency and circular economy practices that respect Africa's development priorities while building climate resilience.

The partnership represents a bridge between two major climate summits. Turkey hosts COP31 while Ethiopia will lead COP32, creating a unique opportunity for continuity in advancing African climate priorities on the world stage.

This collaboration extends far beyond two countries. Australia's ambassador joined planning discussions, emphasizing multilateral cooperation with the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa.

The partnership tackles a critical gap in global climate action. African nations often struggle to secure adequate climate financing and representation in international negotiations, despite facing severe climate impacts.

Ethiopia brings proven experience to the table with its climate-resilient green economy approach, renewable energy investments, and ecosystem restoration programs. Turkey contributes its successful zero waste movement and diplomatic reach as COP31 host.
