Turkey Locks In Record Low Solar Price With Saudi Deal

Turkey is about to generate some of the cheapest solar power on Earth, thanks to a $2 billion partnership with Saudi Arabia that breaks new ground for clean energy affordability.

The deal, signed during President Erdogan's visit to Riyadh this week, will build massive solar plants across two Turkish provinces. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced Turkey will pay just 1.995 euro cents per kilowatt-hour for the next 25 years, shattering the country's previous electricity price records.

"This is the lowest price we have ever seen in Turkey, and we will pass this on to our consumers and citizens," Bayraktar told reporters. The first phase alone will generate 2,000 megawatts of clean power, enough to light up 2.1 million households.

The solar plants will rise in Sivas and Karaman provinces, both in Turkey's central Anatolia region. Construction starts in 2027, with full operation expected by 2029.

But the Saudi partnership doesn't stop there. This $2 billion investment represents just the opening act of a much bigger 5,000-megawatt vision that could reshape Turkey's energy landscape.

The second phase might include cutting-edge floating solar projects taking advantage of Turkey's coastline. Officials see potential for energy storage facilities that could make renewable power even more reliable.

Turkey's ambitious renewable energy target tells the bigger story. The country aims to install 120,000 megawatts of solar and wind capacity by 2035, requiring 8,000 to 9,000 megawatts added to the grid every single year.
